Tanja Truscott is interested in the relationship between the visible world and the pictorial world of the flat canvas. She uses layers of oil paint to create depth and to hide and reveal what is underneath, hinting at content that speaks to the viewer in an oblique and sometimes poetic way.
Working without a prefigured plan allows her to use the unexpected and to develop her interest in intuitive mark making and the role of colour in a non representational manner. Tanja also enjoys drawing the human figure and regularly attends life drawing groups in Observatory and Kalk Bay to hone her observational skills.
Some of these studies are then combined with in situ sketches into abstracted figure paintings, where she strives to uncover the abstract in the figurative, and bring to the fore the shapes that lie underneath the appearance of things.
Tanja studied Graphic Design and worked in educational publishing before turning to painting full time. She paints from Eastside Studios in Woodstock. Her work can be found in galleries in South Africa, as well as in private collections in London, Amsterdam and Zurich.
