Laura Wenman (b.1956) originally from Johannesburg, is an artist and art teacher. These are two professions she feels privileged to be in as she is able to create and further her own craft while being able to share knowledge and have fun doing so. She attended the Johannesburg School of Art for Ballet and Music and later, Cape Tech where she received her diploma in Graphic Design. She has over 15 years of experience as a Graphic Designer and Illustrator having worked for numerous Design Studios and Advertising Agencies as well as teaching Fundamentals in Fine Art Painting later in her career.
While Laura’s subject matter includes landscapes, figures and still lives she has a natural leaning towards portraiture. She describes her favourite medium, oils, as “liquid velvet” due to its versatility and compliant nature.
Laura views the beginning of a new painting in the same way as embarking on a journey. There are peaks and valleys, easy and difficult sections but the experience is so satisfying because after every painting finished has taught her something new.
Her subjects are interpreted representations rather than producing a reproduced frozen image. In this way she makes captures the unique personality, character, soul of her subjects.
Laura has been the recipients of numerous awards over the course of her career including the SASA ‘ Senior Fellow ‘ Award (2018), SASA Annual: Best Oil and Highly Commended (2016) and WCAS Annual: Best Oil and Commended (2014).
